To sponsor an exhibition is to awaken what has been silenced — to let art speak for a generation.

Rice & Books II

An Exhibition Proposal in Fundraising

Introduction

Rice & Books II serves as a conceptual continuation and evolution of The Call of the Wild—not by altering the materials themselves, but by transforming the way audiences engage with them. The exhibition reexamines the fundamental connection between physical and spiritual nourishment: rice sustains the body, while books sustain the soul.

In this new iteration, both rice and books are rendered unusable—rice remains unhusked, and books are soaked in black ink. The former can no longer be eaten; the latter can no longer be read or understood. Though both are visibly present, they remain inaccessible, evoking a tension between appearance and function, between what is shown and what is essential.

Through guided actions and participatory encounters, the exhibition invites viewers to confront the material and spiritual foundations of survival—to reflect on the fragility of our ecological systems, social structures, and inner states.

We welcome you to take part in this space of contemplation—on reality and truth, survival and longing, transformation and exchange.

Curatorial Statement

A book blackened beyond reading.
A grain sealed beyond eating.

Each carries a hidden world—suspended between loss and possibility, between silence and remembrance.
This exhibition unfolds like an elegy, inviting us to confront those everyday necessities that have become strangely distant.
It urges us to reflect: when food can no longer feed, and books can no longer be read, what remains?
And what stories—once immersed in ink—were once told, and perhaps still linger, waiting to be heard?

The process of making the books.
Each book is soaked in deep black ink, rendering its content illegible and transforming it into a silent object.

Rice keeps the body alive,  but books keep the soul awake.

Key Questions Explored

  • When food can no longer feed and books can no longer be read, can we still tell what is truly essential?

👉In an age of simultaneous material and informational excess, has our sense of what is necessary been redefined by consumer logic?
  • The knowledge and resources we cannot access—are they unavailable by accident, or by design?

👉Do the unusable rice and unreadable books symbolize the many things in life that appear present, yet remain inaccessible?
  • How do we rebuild trust and value in a society of endless exchange? Are we trading objects—or meanings?

👉When everything is commodified, is genuine understanding and empathy between humans and the world still possible?
